I recently buy this 1968 penny graded MS-65 by ICCS. Both side have some details that raise some questions. The fields are fine but the hair of the queen over the ear is missing some details (weakness of the strike). This same observation can be done on the reverse with the leaf were the detail are missing with a rough finish.

May be I'm wrong but to get a 65, you need a full strike. Just by seeing this one, MS-64 would be the max for the weakness of the strike itself?

Thanks

That's the ICCS a technical grade. The obverse on the ear is from die burn not circulation. Now, the reverse almost looks like it was struck twice in collar, or massive die clash? The 1969 pennies are found with being double struck in collar but not 1968 that I know of.

May be it's the picture but I can't see die clash with coin in hand. What is evaluated when a grade is apply to a coin? For me, a MS-65 is a near perfect coin with a strong strike with details without weakness. IT's true, the coin never circulated but the grade in case of a MS state should reflect also the quality of the coin?

Suppose we have 2 coin in hand. The first one with perfect field but the hair and crown have less details. The second one have perfect field too but a strong strike. In the case of coin before, the die burning would lower for me the grade even if it's not circulation just becouse it's not a good strike with detail.

May be I'm a bit too fussy...

That's one of the problem with ICCS, eye appeal doesn't count.

But, ICCS is what the Canadian market wants. So while my personal collection is in PCGS holders (and I do like the Registry Set game), coins I sell are in ICCS flips...
