I have only held two us silver coins from the 18th century in my hands. One in 1985 and one a few weeks ago. Both were far out of my price range. So I have no knowledge at all on these. So thank you for your answer.

I hope David reports back his thoughts and maybe a little more information about the coin. I respect him as a collector, and am sure his options are open on this coin. Are you going to have it graded?

I purchased this example from a very knowledgeable dealer whom I have know for over 10 years. The dealer (Carl) has handled hundreds of examples of 17xx dated US silver coinage and despite all my questioning on authenticity assured me this is an authentic example.

I did, of course, do my own independent research after purchasing the coin ... my opinion is stated at the beginning of this thread ... authentic, VG, O-119 die marriage.

Carl gave me a 'lifetime' buyback assurance at the same price I paid for it.

I was not planning on a TPG review of the coin ... some of the opinions expressed above have caused me to at least re-consider that position.

I'll give that idea some thought during my upcoming 6-day desert walk about.

I appreciate everyone's input so far.

David

The OP coin looks good to me. Don't lie the coloration that much but from what I see nothing jumps out at me as fake.

Depending on the price of the coin only buy graded and slabbed coins. You almost never get something for nothing. Everyone knows coin prices who collects, sells or deals with coins besides an 9 year old kid. The coin in question is heavily worn and is unattractive to my eye. I cannot believe that coin is in Fine condition when it is that abraded. What eye appeal does it have? It looks like a slug. Now if you got it at fantastic price that is a different story.

Thanks for the info David. Yeah, I certainly didn't think you made a frivolous purchase or were behind the 8 ball in any way. Thanks for showing us the coin, and keep us posted.

I have collected many "17XX" U.S. coins, and if I were you, I'd get this one authenticated. I don't care for the general look of it.

The boldness of the date looks out of place for me. One of the Chinese counterfeit large cents that an Early American Coppers (EAC) member bought from ebay had a situation like this. Part of the legend on the reverse with bold while the rest of the letters were weaker. The reason was that the Chinese counterfeiter strengthened those letters in an effort to "improve" the look his product.

There has also been an 1803 Half Cent that had a similar situation on the reverse. Unfortunately one or more this coins made it into a "details" PCGS holder.

I'm writing to update this thread ... with all due apologies for the time lapse.

My original intention was to simply keep the raw coin in a 2x2 and enjoy my only Robert Scot example of USA coinage.

That said ... I have learned to trust and truly respect the experts here at the CCF ... you folks truly make up the best internet based coin club ever created .... and I salute all of you for all of your advocacy and contribution.

Also ... please be mindful that coin photography is not yet a skill within my strong suit ... so perhaps my poor photographs contributed to the uncertainty of authentication ... for which I accept responsibility.

Anyways ... the concerns suggested by several of you convinced me to send the coin for professional attribution.

I humbly quote myself with the raw coin opinion ...

Quote:
I say authentic, VG in grade (hopefully) and O-119 as the die marriage.

The PCGS Wizards have weighed in with their opinion ...

Opinions---1795-Flowing-Hair-Half-Dollar

The Wizards could be wrong as well I suppose ... but for me I'm closing the chapter on this coin with my joy at having a coin I truly enjoy at a fair price.

Any additional thoughts?

David

Congrats, David! You did well. I wouldn't have taken the chance on a raw coin like that regardless of who the seller was, but that's just because I don't have nearly enough knowledge and experience to feel comfortable with doing so.

Congrats! It sounds like it is a dealer you trust and one who gave a money back guarantee, so you had nothing to lose except maybe the cost of authentication. In that situation there is no reason not to buy it if you feel it is real. Glad it worked out.
