This one looked like an N-16 by date position. R5- Looks about F-12 or so? Any added value due to variety? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1846-tall-d...p=true&rt=nc Hoping the color looks less orange and more brown in hand. Photography issue.

CQR lists the following values for N-16:
in F12 ave - $50
on VG8 ave - $40
Assuming CQR is correct, It looks like it does have a moderate premium v.s R-4 varieties.
The same seller also had a nice looking 1830 N-10. Was really tempted to bid on it but went jogging and forgot all about it.

Looking at the reverse it would seem that the obverse of this coin should be stronger than it is. I can only give it a VG given the weak "LIBERTY." That feature was large and durible on the Matron Head and Braided Hair large cents.

I know what you mean Bill. Grellman states this variety is struck very weakly at Liberty especially at LI so I guess thats why that area looks like it does.

I don't collect large cents by die variety, and Newcomb varieties drive me nuts. I know that a number of guys made some very good money spotting Newcomb varieties 20 to 25 years ago, but I could never be one of them. John Wright's "Cent Book" is a wonderful reference. The books for the 1840 to 1857 cents, not so much.

VG10 here too. Probably a nice brown in-hand.
