Has anyone here ever bid on a Heritage Auction. I've bid on ebay and I see something I like at Heritage, but have never used them. I'm weary of placing an absentee bid because I've never done it before. Any information is appreciated!

Thanks

Hi Dorion,

I recommend you join Heritage as a member. Just go to their website at http://coins.ha.com and click on the "join now" link. Your free membership gives you access to bid on their auctions from the website. You can also then use the Permanent Auction Archives to research previous coins that have sold. That is a terrific feature.

I have heard that ebay bidders are somewhat at a disadvantage during Heritage auctions. Apparently the ebay bids don't get processed as quickly as bids made from the website. Also, Heritage charges a 15% buyers fee when you win a lot. ebay bids I think carry a 20% fee.

I've purchased some of my best coins from Heritage and I do recommend them. The prices however do tend to be pretty high.

Good luck! If you win something, please post it so we can all share in your success!

Try to remember that most, not all, auction systems contain what is usually called ringers. Those are individuals that are hired by the auction houses to up bids on items when they are lacking. If they win the item, then it just goes back up for auction at a later date of will appear on another auction owned by the same people.
This is the main problem with any auction. You usually end up caught up in bidding frenzy with a ringer and you end up paying way to much for items.

You pay a 20% buyer's fee on top of your bid; and if you reside in Texas, you also pay sales tax. The coins are always top quality, but you can do better on ebay.

When you include buyers premium and insured shipping, Heritage is not a good source of coins unless you are spending well over $100 but if you are spending large amounts, it is one of the better places to get nice coins.

Never bid on an ebay auction from Heritage though- the BP is higher and there is a bid delay as well. Heritage accounts are free to set up and you have access to auction records and pics for hundreds of millions of dollars of coins.
