There appears to be some extra metal along the edge of the obverse to the right of the date. I was wondering whether this is relatively common, how it might happen, and if there is a name for it. Any thoughts?

It is a Cud. Not sure how it happens but nice find!

I believe it's called a rim Cud

I agree with John1, it is a relatively common (and generally much less valuable, although you never know...) type of Cud called a Rim Cud. Full Cuds and Retained Cuds are the ones that have some nice value. I hope this is helpful. It is a cool coin though. Nice find.

A Cud is a specific type of die break that involves the face and shank of the die. There is no actual "extra metal", the planchet just expands more than normal to fill the void in the die after the broken piece falls away.
