My dad found this coin while digging footers for his deck about 10 years ago. I'm looking for opinions and advice. Is it worth getting cleaned? Is there a way I can get the green off myself without ruining it? Or should it be left alone?

Thanks

The bad news is the corrosion damage is permanent. You may be able to soak in acetone and get some gunk off and maybe apply some olive oil to preserve what's left. With an approx value of about $25-30, it's probably not worth sending to NCS to get it conserved and even then, the parts of the coin that's been damaged is still irreversible.

1sikevo; Is there a time limit on soaking in acetone? ie can I soak too long? And does this apply to silve and nickle as well? By $25-30 do you mean value now, conserved, or if it was not corroded. And last, if this coin had been cleaned when it first came out of the ground would there be less corrosion?
Thanks

Gbchaosmaster; AU50 details I understand. Could you please explain nograde: PO1
Thanks

Vaslin; You just might like this one then. I p[osted this one on a metal detecing forum under an oldest find thread and one of the guys really loved, said it had character.

Haha! Yea, definitely character to that one. I'm afraid that's a bit too extreme for even me!

PO1 = Poor
FR2 = Fair
AG3 = Almost Good
G4 = Good

BTW: I don't think acetone will do anything to this.

No amount of work will make a corroded large cent any better. I've tried.

The only cleaning that would do anything is pretty severe, an electrolysis machine. The corrosion will definitely look worse, but will keep the coin from deteriorating further.
