I've been floating it around a few coin dealers and some say that it's VF while others say XF. VF catalogs at 150 USD while XF catalogs for 675 USD. Can anyone place the grade of it?

My unqualified opinion would be aEF/gVF.
If you are selling, go to the dealers who believe it's XF; if not grade it in line with how you grade the rest of your collection.
I've attached images of an unworn sample of the type: an 1868 trial for Cupro Nickel (pity about the spots of verdigris).

Thanks Rob! I'm thinking about getting it certified, but if NGC gives it a VF, I might have to crack it out.

CCGB gives VF £100 EF £300.(retail)
I believe XF US grade is less than UK VF.
I would suggest a fairly weak strike around VF nett. Pity about the obverse lettering around REG.This would certainly prevent it being graded by CGS.

Nice trial coin Rob

As a U.S. collector, I don't think that is true if you are using strict U.S. standards. EF in U.S. terms means very light wear with most of all of the mint luster gone. An EF-45 will have some mint luster in protected areas; an EF-40 will have no luster.

I would grade the half penny that started this thread as an EF with reservations coin using U.S. standards. There is some vertegras in the letters on the right side of the obverse and in some letters and the date on the reverse. If this stuff has gotten into the metal, that will lower the grade further to VF.

NGC graded this William III crown VF-35. That is pretty close using American standards. I could call it VF-30. Would this piece grade less than VF using British standards?

Here are some London coin auction results.
The reverse looks about London Coins (CGS) F and maybe NVF obverse.
