Hi, I recently obtained a roll of 1965 Kennedy halves. It seems original, the roll is brown paper with black imprint. The imprint says "Cincinatti Branch Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland $10 Halves $10, Johnson Fare Box Co. Chicago". The outer coins seem in good condition (no scratches etc) with some patina along the edges, though. Do you have any idea what the value could be?

Using the latest metal prices and the specifications above, these are the numbers required to calculate melt value:

$17.26 = silver price / ounce on Apr 27, 2016.
.40 = silver %
$2.2318 = copper price / pound on Apr 27, 2016.
.60 = copper %
11.5 = total weight in grams
.0321507466 = ounce/gram conversion factor
.00220462262 = pound/gram conversion factor (see note directly below)

The CME uses pounds to price copper and that means we need to multiply the metal price by .00220462262 to make the conversion to grams. The silver price is based in troy ounces and that means we need to multiply the metal price by .0321507466 to make the conversion to grams.

1. Calculate 40% silver value :

(17.26 × .0321507466 × 11.5 × .40) = $2.5526406770

$2.5526 is the rounded silver value for the 1965-1970 silver Kennedy half dollar on April 27, 2016. This is usually the value used by coin dealers when selling these coins at melt value. However, the total melt value is continued below.

2. Calculate 60% copper value :

(2.2318 × .00220462262 × 11.5 × .60) = $0.0339495

3. Add the two together :

$2.5526406770 + $0.0339495 = $2.5865901770

$2.5865901770 is the total melt value for the 1965-1970 silver Kennedy half dollar on April 27, 2016.

Well thanks, so I assume there is no extra value for the original wrapping.

If you have a MS66 or higher coin it's worth way more than melt.

Swiss Eagle: Assuming that this is an original bank rapped roll of Uncirculated 1965 Halves, there are people who will pay a premium for bank wrapping that dates back to when the coins were issued. I have no idea what this kind of stuff would bring in Switzerland or elsewhere in Europe. Here in the Dtates original bank wrapped rolls from common dates (and 65 Halves are common) generally will bring $3 to $10 over normal roll price for average BU coins (being MS-60 to MS-63) at coin shows. Can be more if the bank is from a real small town of some significance in the local area your are selling it in. And then also here in the States at a rural auction (town 10,000 population or less and more than one hour away from a 50,000+ city) sometimes this type of stuff brings moon money cause that was the year a person significant in someone's life was born or it was the year they were married. Now it shouldn't of course bring moon money but a rural auction (even big city ones too) can bring out people that decide they want a certain item period and forget the price. Because you live in Switzerland you need to check auction records Europe wide to see what this stuff actually brings over here. Maybe original rolls of bank wrapped American half dollars are scarce over there. President Kennedy getting put on the half dollar in 1964 and then then silver in the half getting cut from 90% down to 40% in 1965 and then eliminated altogether going to clad in 1971 really killed the half dollar as a circulated coin in the States. Today they sit in banks and in fact in from 2002 on the U.S. Mint has only struck enough to fill mint sets and the rolls that they sell (at a premium over face). So it could be that just because people don't see it all that often that they get the idea that it is rare.
