According to Wikipedia: Quote: most of them are purchased by coin collectors. The remainder go to banks, though most do not give them out unless the customer specifically requests so. Given enough notice, any bank should be able to obtain them in a significant quantity for their customers. Is this true? I have asked a few tellers while picking up boxes of cents at the bank and the teller said they give them back to the mint. The teller also said they do not receive any from the mint. The 50 cent pieces in Canada are no longer made for circulation, so they're not distributed through the banking system. Any found in a bank came from customers turning them in (like me).

I give them out as tips, along with the nickel dollars

I got $40 in half/large dollar coins a few years back, haven't really asked after that. It's possible for sure, just ask around at your local banks. They won't order them for you though, only what they have on hand.

Then why does the page for the special wrap 50 cent roll on the mint website say the finish is circulation? Okiecoiner: I was going to do something similar like what you said.

They are circulation strikes, but they aren't distributed for circulation.

Okay, thanks. That's still sort of weird; circulation finish coins not distributed and intended for circulation.

exactly! the 50 cent coin is and has hardly been used for a long time in our coinage system....
So the mint still makes 'em... but they charge you double the price for a roll.. and they don't send 'em out to banks to be distributed..... it's how do you say... a cash grab?

Yes, indeed; it would be much better if they sold them 5% over face (or whatever percentage it is), like what they do with regular circulation rolls in Winnipeg branch.

Keeping asking the tellers. Sometimes you will get lucky if recent customers cashed in 50 cent pieces and the branch still has them. If you are a regular customer at the branch you could trying asking them to save any that come in for you.

I don't think the odds of obtaining 50c from banks are very good, definately not higher than any other older circulation coins. Aside from a collector from time to time depositing them (I did so a few months ago but they had severe PCV damage), 50c were rarely circulated even back in the 70s and that was over 40 years ago. They also now fall within the ARP so banks have no reason to hoard them.
