I know exactly how you feel about your Nikon gear, I've got enough of it to abhor going to another camera and lens setup for just macro photography, especially since I can use my old lenses on the new digital bodies. You might look at the Nikon D7000 body, I've tethered mine to a Marshall viewing screen for flower photography and it will work just fine with coins or anything else. I've got three of them, they range in price from $250 to $400, depending on where you get yours. The shutter count is important, they are rated for 150,000 clicks, so you want to get one with less than 50,000 clicks to get good useful life. At 150,000, the seals and pins wear down and will need replaced, a shop job around $250.
The D7000 runs at 16 megapixels, which is still pretty darn good and perfectly fine for macro work. Hardware happiness is expensive.
