This emperor is over shadowed by Marcus Aurelius, but I really love the attention to detail with this incredible portrait. Indeed, I confess I am in disbelief of the quality after 1800 years. Lucius Verus RIC 491 17mm 3.39 grams

That is impressive--his iris is clearly visible!

Incredible face detail on the reverse as well! Condition: As Struck - wow!
I don't normally grade ancient coins here in the CCF.

I'd be hard pressed to draw his face at the size of your pic on paper. Consider it was done in metal that was 17mm across. I'm amazed.
Roman coin engravers always get a bad rap compared to the Greeks, but overall they weren't too shabby - especially considering that few matched their artistry for the next 1200 years.
Stunning example.

And their pictorial arts weren't too shabby either! I strongly encourage anyone who isn't familiar with the Fayum mummy portraits of Roman Egypt to do a Google Image Search on "Fayum Portraits"...Truly amazing works which, as you say jskirwin, would be unmatched in Western art for more than a millennium...at which point one of my personal heroes, Giotto di Bondone, enters from stage left.

Very pretty, well preserved coin. It must have been very satisfying to be able to snag that one. Mint state pieces do seem unbelievable to some. Enjoy!
