Does anyone have any insight into whether or not any additional Twonies will be offered in 2016 beyond the standard Polar Bear circulation, specimen, and proof (both bronze and silver/gilt) coins? If the young wildlife specimen set is continued in 2016, I would expect to see a new young wildlife specimen townie. Is anyone aware of anything else planned? Perhaps a 20th anniversary twonie.

As of now, no new Orders have been issued by Canada's Privy Council regarding new circulating $2 coins for 2016.

The Council has authorized the issue of a new circulating $1 coin in honor of Canada's participation in the upcoming Rio Olympic Games, however. One or more NCLT coins for the Rio Games seems likely as well.

RCM has already celebrated the 20th anniversary of the toonie with this $$$$$ set:

I could be wrong but if they were to issue any single collector toonies, I'd think it would have been released on the same date the anniversary was celebrated.

But I'm also quite certain this toonie collector year isn't done, still several months left....

Ouch!! I now see what you mean by $$$$$$. I think my Toonie collection will be just fine without these. Also, I don't feel too bad because these toonies have a 30mm diameter. I'm trying to restrict my collection to the standard 28mm diameter toonies so I also exclude the 2015 $2 Big Coin. Still struggling whether to include the 4 gold toonies from 1996, 1999, 2000, and 2006. I'll build out the rest of my collection first with BU/PL, specimen, and proof varieties and then determine whether to bite the bullet and go for the gold pieces as well. I might end up selling a couple of $100 gold commemorative proofs I purchased back in the seventies to purchase the gold toonies. Or I can always keep my fingers crossed to win the lottery. Tonight's jackpot is $348 million. I could buy a few coins with that.

I have a toonie collection as well, but so far I've limited it to Circulation, PL and varieties thereof. Thanks for mentioning the larger diameter of the $$$$$ set, I hadn't realized. Whew! Pfffttt, no interest whatsoever in irregular sized toonies.

I have a few $100 gold coins from the '70s too. Now that you mention it, selling that and buying gold toonies is actually an excellent idea to think about. Although the basis of my collection is mainly older silver circulated coin, I think it's good to have some recent interest....that way only one of either me or my collection keep getting older.

And good luck on that lottery! $348 million, you could be handing out those $$$$$ sets on the street like pocket change! LOL!

wildflower - looks like some of my coin purchases will be delayed. Didn't win the lottery last night. The good news is -- no one else won the jackpot either. Jackpot for Saturday sits at $415 million.

As has been reported in another thread, the answer to the question in the first post is now: Yes, there will be a commemorative circualtion Toonie in 2016.

Quote:

The RCM wishes to produce a commemorative $2 circulation coin in honour of Canada's veterans on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Canada's leadership role in the Battle of the Atlantic (1939-1945). This coin will communicate the contributions and sacrifices of our veterans in order to facilitate remembrance among Canadians. It will inform and educate Canadians about the meaning, significance and relevance of Canada's military history. These coins serve as tangible keepsakes of the contributions and sacrifices of our veterans.
