I have this as RIC 86 (Sear 8617). I liked this specimen for its very legible obverse legend, while the reverse die seems to have been in a somewhat more advanced state of wear. A very common issue, I believe, with my reason for posting being simply to ask what is the significance of the "N" at the end of the reverse legend?

Harlan Berk once explained to me that it is a common problem with these earlier antonniniani that one or the other side of the coin will lack definition in the strike. This was not due to die wear, but rather to a weak strike in an alloy that was not well adapted for the minting methods of the time. Harlan said it is rare and exceptional to have a strong clear strike on both sides of these coins. Interestingly, the problem seems to have cleared up with further debasement of the coinage.
