Hi: This example is graded PCGS XF45. I think it makes the grade, but the surfaces are questionable to me. They are almost too even to be natural. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

Looks good to me even grey, no halos around the stars, attractive half.

That's the exact look I go for. I really like it. Great coin! Totally original IMHO.

Admittedly the color is remarkably even, but I think it's OK as well. Very nice.

Perfectly-graded EF-45. A hair darker than I would personally like, but perfectly original.

Thanks to all of you for taking the time to respond. I really like this coin also, but I was just unsure about the originality of the toning. I don't like to rely on TPG, and this process is helping me develop my skills. Thanks again for your responses. I would like to see a thread on here on the subject of originality. Specifically, if an experienced grader can't say with certainty that the surfaces are original or not, does it really matter? Is that what "market acceptable" means? In the interviews that I have read with John Albanese, he places great import on unmolested surfaces. At the same time though, he admits that they (CAC) have made mistakes in some cases. Maybe one day I will start the topic.

It is classic EF-40, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the color or the evenness of the toning.
