I paid $20.00 for this coin. The condition, in my opinion, is above average and all lines and details pretty sharp. I know NOTHING about it or foreign coins and bought it blind. Good deal or "junk". Just because it was old.... 1881 and .900 silver.......I figured it was neat enough to pay that, and it was to me....but I thought I might get a more professional opinion on it.....of course WITHOUT PICTURES ! I know .....I know.... I REALLY need to try that again with the camera !

This coin was minted in 7 different locations, so the mint mark (below the eagle's tail) would go a long way in determining value. According to Krause, all of these coins are worth better than $20 in EF condition.

I will put my glass on it tonight and see on the mintmark ! I'm NEVER lucky, so it's probably just the average ole 1881 German Mark 1 !! Ha Ha (?)
But so, that mintmark could be the difference between what range of value ? $20.00-$35.00 or something ?
And I know people tend to "over-grade" their coins.......but to me it's at the very least, average condition, so I guess I'd go with "average" to be safe.
7 different Mint Marks ? Wow ! Can't wait to see.......thks

According to the Jaeger catalog, the 1881 piece, in vz/EF, is worth about €35 if the mint mark is A (Berlin) or D (Munich). The mid range would be E (Dresden), F (Stuttgart) and J (Hamburg) with about €50-€70. The expensive ones are G (Karlsruhe) €230 and H (Darmstadt) €250.

But apart from the mint (and mintage), a lot depends on the grade. In schφn/fine, for example, it would cost €2-€15 depending on the mint ...

Okay....There are "two" capital "A"'s .......one on each side of the eagles tail, right along the rim. So, I guess my coin is the Berlin mint......
I really really need to try "digital picture taking" of my coins again !! Thanks for the help even though it can't be graded without pics.

Yep.
