I was looking at the 1888 dime today and was surprised that the relative value to the mintage is low compared to other Victorian dimes.

It seems that it has one of the lowest values across all grades, yet has a mintage of only 500k, in comparison there are many dimes with much higher mintage's and are worth significantly more.

71, 71H, 72, 74H, 80, 81, 82, 86, 2x-3x mintage

91, 94 at similar mintage levels

Is there some kind of back story on this, I've searched the forum, but have not seen much on the 1888 dime. PCGS/NGC population reports seem comparable to other dates.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

It is most likely because people knew this date had a low mintage and therefore hoarded them. The dates with higher mintage's people thought nothing of and let circulate. This has happened with some specific US coins, but I have no knowledge on Canadian coinage, just an educated guess.

That would be my guess too. That they are available in higher grades despite being low mintages. Simple supply and demand that regulates most of our hobby. Supply drops and Demand goes up, there is a premium. Supply drops but demand doesn't increase, then the value stays relative.
