What do you think of it in hand, looks like another painted coin.

Fantastic photo, that blue enamel is the colour of "shiver"!

I'm curious to know when RCM will tell us what and how many other coins will be in the Iconic Canada series. While I'm not an avid series collector whatsoever, my preference is all or nothing and so it's helpful to know what to expect in advance.

I got these in-hand the other day too, they are stunning! The enamel is really nicely done on this one. I love how you can see the iceberg underneath.

It is not painted , the blue water is glass like. The mint calls it translucent blue enamel. It is nice looking in hand though.

Thank you T1Steel, for posting.

I liked the coin. But wish they engrave the bear cub more professionally.

Sold out? Otherwise the 45 day MC exclusive access must soon be over and RCM will make available the leftovers for sale to the public at the MC price of $109.95?

"This is the first coin in the Royal Canadian Mint's innovative new series featuring classic Canadian icons highlighted with cutting-edge design and technology."

"Classic Canadian icons" - what the series consists of or other release dates, unknown.... From a marketing perspective, it's highly unusual that RCM would keep series details under wrap, similar to the 2oz voyageur. Seems a tad noncommittal in terms of the longevity of the MC program in general, just a fleeting thought....

Not a lot of talk about this coin, especially considering the low mintage of 4,000. I'd be surprised if the issue wasn't bought up by MC but not much action on ebay either - less than 20 currently for sale with 11 sold most of them about at cost.

What's up with one? Flub, sleeper.....opinions?

The theme is overdone, if the did some truly unique design for mc version one might get a little excited, with no ebay actions kind of shows were this coin is headed.

@john100

I do not believe dealers will be able to sell this coin at a discount. Why does every coin have to be measured against ebay action? Maybe, some dealers will give this as a freebie to some of their VIP members like the MC Goose coin was.

While certainly not the only sales channel out there, reviewing ebay sales is an extremely useful way to assess how much demand a particular coin has among collectors. Over time, the "Sold" prices on ebay tell you how much folks are willing to pay - sometimes more than issue, often below*. It's a very powerful data set.

*Demand can change over time and a coin with a "weak" price today could develop a following and have its market value rebound over time. ebay will reflect this as well.

I guess what surprises me is, for sake of comparison, other low mintage NCLT such the Inukshuk could be said to be an overdone theme as well, yet it was far more hyped.

One theory, 45 days is far too long a lag time for the competitive factor to successfully play out --- as an observation that behaviour could best be described as somewhere between the thrill of the hunt and capture, to the excitement of being in front of the line to quickly snap up a buy before others can. All sorts of psychological factors arise while impulse buying.

But possibly "exclusive" periods of time lasting 45 days, it maybe becomes boring, the general public doesn't know this coin exists, not advertised or promoted by RCM and so as a result the thrill/satisfaction factor then is missing?

This nice piece will be discounted sooner or later. And first of all by the sellers on ebay. Sure many will ask for issue+ but will be no buyers.
And its normal with NCLT....whoever enjoy the coin - do not care about its price, but the person who need to sell - will lower the price.

Well okay, thanks for all the replies. I still haven't got this one quite figured out though because of the low 4,000 mintage.
Because I'm willing to bet my whole crop of newly planted brussel sprouts that next month, or the next or next that any and all NCLT with a mintage of 4,000 will be a much sought after item... "only X left!, almost a sellout in only 2 days!, price already rising on ebay". That's why my theory of the Polar Bear MC exclusive offering over 45 days misses out on the competitive heat of the moment (Which may or may not also apply to the Gold Star Trek coin that's not shipped until September...)

Doesn't really matter, just interesting how some coins are hot and others not..... Whether it's hyped at the onset is of little significance to a collector over the longterm. (New1954 this is likely what you meant by questioning NCLT measured by ebay action.)

Why the northern lights?
It distracts from the main characters in the portrait.
I understand it is a polar bear, but a nice proof finish
flat field would contrast better and maybe define the animals better.
The ubiquitous northern lights, on every bloody coin. Enough. End of rant.

I like the enamel which shows the ice beneath.
Thanks for sharing the pics.
