I was speaking to someone at a coin show recently. He told me that he has a colleague who collects third party grader slab error coins. That is, a slab (graded by NGC and/or the like) with the incorrect information on the label. For example, a mislabeled coin or a mislabeled date. I thought it was interesting. So, decided to share here.

"Buy the holder, not the coin."

A new (relatively) twist on an old proverb. If that's what someone enjoys, I have no problem with it. I do have a couple incorrectly labelled TPGs.

there have been a number that have been posted on here over the past few years, I don't think I heard of anyone specifically collecting them, but to each their own.

I have a couple for the novelty value as part of my slabs collection, but I don't seek them out and won't pay more than a couple bucks extra.

Best one is an 1851O 3CS marked 1851 that I bought from a dealer friend (as an 1851) while discussing the id10t across the way who wanted $500 for a $50 Franklin with the wrong mint-mark on the label. I figure I saved $10 and have never told him that I cherrypicked him :-).

I recently purchased a au58 50cent millenium coin noted by PCGS as relief (normal) but in actual fact is and mint error INCUSED!
This error coin was not found or realised for years! Hence the reason PCGS was inaware that the error existed for this coin and labelled it incorrectly. There has been the option to send it back to be reslabbed..but I'm thinking...Il keep it as is.

Ive only ever found one reference to the sale of a coin like this (PCGS population report shows only 2 ever been graded) selling in 2015 for $700-$800 to a private owner.
I wonder if the value for this has held? Id be interested to hear your opinion.

Well, in the spirit of a mechanical error, being slabbed before the proper attribution was known is a little 1984ish. But MinTruth aside, which makes YOU happier? Having it properly attributed or the snort "oh, btw, that's 1 of 2 known, but it's not labeled"

Regardless of the label, the coin itself is very beautiful, and any savvy collector would pay a premium for it no matter how it was packaged. Having it correctly attributed is a good idea, but anyone who knows anything about decimal varieties can see that it's an incuse without looking at the label.

I'm interested in the process of slabbing in general, and now I'm wondering how often errors like that occur is someone able to focus specifically on slabs with errors alone.
