I've had cataracts in first one then the other eye over last couple years so I needed to get a good magnifier. I bought a 20 times lighted one and WOW what a new world of studying coins but I am seeing a lot more faults that have caused me to wonder about some of my grading opinions of my coins. Surely they don't use this much for standard grading do they?

Brian (ICCS) recommended a 4-5x magnification loupe with a 50-watt bulb for lighting. Higher if your eyesight is bad.

I do not believe that the ANA has a standard for this.

I read an article about PCGS procedures where the writer said he used mostly 5x magnification but sometimes took another look with 8x. Also said he sometimes used 10-14x for authentication and varity issues.

Remember, at higher magnification, you are seeing the trees not the forest. You can use higher magnification if you need too, but you will have to train yourself to recognize how the picture you are seeing relates to current grading standards. You have to remember that some of the issues you are seeing are actually no issue at all at lower magnification. For example, on an MS-63 coin, bag marks and hairlines might look depressingly large when viewed under 20x magnification but be relatively minor and in accordance with the grade when viewed in hand or under low magnification.

Personally I use 5x or 10x, depending on the size of the coin (with 20x thrown in for the odd issue) because my eyes aren't what they used to be either.

My eyes are not that good any more and I have been using reading glasses for the last 5 years.
Before I send any coin to PCGS I always image it with my camera setup the view the coin on the computer monitor.
With some small coins this is probably about 50x magnification.
Nothing on the coin can hide from me when I do this

I use a 4x6x10x loupe. Generally I use the 6x for grading.

Well that's a relief because at 20x as mentioned I was seeing hairlines and imperfections I hadn't seen before.
