Was looking through some half dollars that I put to the side and found (see image) a doubling on the words (of America and the 3 upper wing tips).

Did noticed that there is a similar type on ebay.

Common or uncommon?

Thanks

I think it's Strike Doubling, very common on larger coins.

Sorry it wasn't better news. I roll search half dollars and see halves like this every week, usually multiple coins per box. The two most common true errors I find are 1974D DDO of the word "TRUST" and 1982P missing the FG designer initials.

Thanks RCook,

Didn't think it was an amazing find. Just amazed that I found 3 that I did not see before.

Is Strike Doubling consider a true DD (double die)?

Or is a DD need to be above. Like the 1955 penny?

Strike Doubling occurs at the time of the strike, Doubled Dies are already on the die prior to the strike. Shortly, I will post a pic for you that shows basic differences between the two.

A thousand words indeed, it depicts the most sought after and valuable Doubled Die. There are other classes of Doubled Dies, nine total I believe. For starters, you absorb this one and you'll be well on your way. BTW, anytime you're not sure about what the "normal" device looks like, you can usually compare it to another coin of the same year.
