I have a steady turnover of wheat cents that come through, and I understand there was a short-lived trend of lacquering that is long dead.. but I know I do not often see coins that are coated, and the few I have seen were obvious to me. I had assumed the treated wheats are in the minority.

Could it be that there were many, many more that had been treated and most collectors/dealers could not tell? I am seeing a white waxy residue lodged in a couple of places on the legends on several coins I recently came by. If I had to guess, it looks like it could be a thin shellac that is not bonded to the surface. The areas are very small, so I am not yet sure I could capture it in photos since I have not yet photographed those coins. Other cents have surfaces that seem odd to me, such as this 1917..

A dealer had this labeled "MS63." I think it may have been cleaned, but mainly I suspect it has something coating it, mostly because of the "chipped" looking spot to the left of the date.

So mainly, my questions: Are there many of these that were treated? What could be the source of the wax-like crud on the uncirculated coins? Also, what could cause that spot on the 1917 cent pictured above? Thanks.

This coin is far from MS63. Most like AU50 cleaned.
The original patina was stripped away by cleaning.
The surface looks dull because of this cleaning.

Not an MS coin, you can see wear on all the high points. The master hub was redone in 1916 and most 1917 show great detail in the beard. The rims also show signs of wear. I agree with md, it looks like it was probably cleaned at some point, I see no indication of luster.

As for your other questions, who knows? All I could say is that something was done to it.

Thanks, guys! You rock! I guess I knew it. I was guessing that it was unc cleaned (there are fine scratches all over Lincoln) and that the cleaning chemicals that had caused the toning over time.

However, Those surfaces are a no-man's land as far as luster is concerned. I was guessing that the cleaning took most of it, but I did not notice the beard, and you are absolutely right, BadThad, those '17's do come sharp. I still think some traces of luster should persist in the recesses, which is really what led me to first suspect lacquer or something similar. For that amount of wear, I think it is overly dull.

I sent out the questionable cents this morning for a second opinion from a dealer I know. When I get them back a little later, I will post a close-up or two of the white residues I brought up earlier.

It is, nonetheless, a rather handsome coin.
