I hope I have this in the right place.

If you take a look at the "C" mintmark you will see that it is missing the top 30% of the mark. Under 40X magnification there is no evidence of shearing or other impact damage which may have caused this but you can see at the top of the remaining mark where metal has been deposited, increasing the size in thickness and height.

Has anyone with Newfoundland experience seen this before or can someone offer a reason for this?

I have the 1945C NFLD 5 cents as well, and it also has the broken C. Of the 18 currently on ebay, only 2 have the broken C. Hope this helps.
