I haven't received this coin yet but it looks to me like a thick D/C running off the last "1" in the date. I've never seen or heard of it before and it's not in Zoell's works either.
Has anyone come across this before?

Cheers, Bill

Reminds me of the Spur N die cracks on the 1881 1c !

The 1901 Die crack on 1 is not listed in the Charest, or Charlton 2011 large cent varieties (as the list only goes to 1900... boo)
Haven't seen it before but thats a cool variety!

I'll look at mine. I usually throw the '01's in a pile.

I've never seen one like that. It does look like a die crack. Nice coin!

I don't think that it's a die crack .. it looks like the "micro D" 1881 and not really linear just like the '81. I just looked through the "handy" 1901's that I have on my coin desk (77 of them) and found 2 that had what looked like small rust pits where hounddog's "D/C is. I think that someone on the mint floor etched/punched that line to stop and possible future cracks from forming, just like I've always thought that most of the 'mico-D" was also manually done .. to stop a crack from spreading. In any metal subject to stresses, cracks can form at any sharp or quick-direction change design or embossing. Stresses accumulate there. That's why most D/C you see on the Vickies start at the denticles or the tops of I's R's, N's, E's or anything else with a top serif in the lettering. I can olok in some boxes and probably find 50-60 more, but others should look and see if you can find a few, like mine, with the little rust-spot dots to the left of the 1. I can definitely feel them with a hawthorn coming out at 90 degrees from the 1..

Thank's for looking Okie, It sure would be nice to see another one. The picture is cropped from the listing and is not that clear I'll try and take some better one's when I receive it. Appreciate all the reply's thanks again.

Cheers, Bill
