not my coin but wanted to get feedback from EAC guys for the surface condition and net grade on this one. The details are great on this coin but not sure of surfaces from these photos. What do you think? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1797-Draped...AOSw3mpXM8TK

Details look VF-30/35. The surfaces are a little porous, but not unpleasing. There is a scratch on the obverse. I can see a net down to F-15/VF-20 on this one. I like it, and I would not hesitate to buy it had I the funds.

It is incuse, so no. Plus, the die crack for the S-139 points in a different direction.

i know little about this type of large cent but it did look like that crack or scratch was in the same spot as the picture on S-139 at largecent.net

Very interesting. Looks to be VF-35 or even EF-40 based on wear alone.

S-139. I really can't tell from those pictures whether the surface is rough/micro porous, or is it just spotty toning. This is a cent which you need to have in hand to assess properly. Judging by the detail alone, it certainly seems VF25 to VF30.
Regarding S-139: Breen says S-139 is often mistaken for S-124. I can certainly attest to that. I have a cent in my collection which was attributed by a dealer many years ago as S-124. It was not until a had a decent catalogue with decent pictures to properly attribute coppers that I find out it is really S-139. Huge difference in rarity. R-1 vs. R-5+. It was very cheap so no harm done, and I was able to pick up an S-124 a short while later as well.

EF or better sharpness but overall granular surface knocks it down to a net grade of VF-20. The mark appears to be into the surface, so I'd say that it's a scratch. Given the surface issues, it doesn't take much if anything off the net grade.
Although the net grade is VF-20, many copper collectors would rather have a unnetted VF-20 piece that this one.
