I was recently going through a collection of pennies. I noticed that for some reason Canadian pennies generally from 1998 to around 2003 appear to have finishes that are indicative of some plating related issues. Unfortunately I am unable to capture a picture for posting but all of these pennies seem to have a background that is noticeably mottled or noticeable with parallel lines.

It was so obvious and so pervasive that I would think this a reported issue. Yet I could not find any mention of this in the few years old version of the Charlton Standard Catalog.

I tried to search the forums but was not directed to anything useful.

Can someone throw some light on this matter.

The zinc core pennies often have "lines" on them or look mottled, I think it's a zinc core issue. I don't recall seeing it on the steel core pennies. Probably gas bubbles or something of the sort.

Edit: The lines and bubbling goes over the design, right? Not only just on the fields? I tried to find an old photo I took but can't find it.

I'm not possitive but I think SlurExe97 is talking about a coin like this one.
I know they're not collectable or hold any value but I like them just the same.

Cheers, Bill

Here's another 1999 cent with plating issues but a little different.

Cheers, Bill

Hi Hounddog Bill,

Your images are the conditions I am running into. I realize that they may not be collectable but has anything been written about them. I have not been looking at pennies but recently I went through a few rolls and it seemed everyone for some specific dates like 1999 were like that.

I find those ones with the lines very beautiful. The lines change orientations relative to the portrait orientation. I am assuming it must be something in the planchette.

BTW - Nice images. Thx

They are common on zinc core pennies. I don't recall this on steel core pennies but they may be out there.

Since the lines look similar to rolling marks - they go in the same direction on both sides, in my opinion the cause is from striations in the original zinc core. They are plated and the air pockets expanded just after striking.

Maybe someone else has a different idea?
