It looks to be a rechenpfennig which is not a coin but a token and probably made of brass.

That is correct. These tokens come in a vast amount of varieties and were mainly produced in Nuremberg bei the Lauer family.

Weight diameter and thickness would help to confirm that this piece may or may not be gold, gold plated, or just brass.

If it's NOT "play money" then what is it?

Here is the translation of the German wikipedia article I linked:

Quote:
A Rechenpfennig , as Münzmeisterpfennig or in southern Germany as Raitpfennig called, was a computational tool which, when on lines arithmetic was used.

The computing on line was a calculation method that in Central Europe was about the 13th to the 17th century in use. In a divided with lines board or cloth flat discs were mostly placed in metal. The value of the metal discs that received münzähnliches appearance over time was, depending on their positions on the board. From the 15th century, especially the free imperial city of Nuremberg developed alongside the Netherlands at a center of manufacturing Rechenpfennige. Most of the Rechenpfennige produced in Europe was marked there. Even after the transition from the Roman numeral font on the Indian system of numerals , whereby the written arithmetic was much easier Rechenpfennige were coined as a play money until the 19th century.

Basically, these were used as counters.

Piece is almost certainly brass, not gold.

Don't be so harsh on yourself. I honestly like the fact that you learn German on your own. I know that learing a language all by yourself is pretty hard
