A friend brought this coin to the club meeting last night, but no one knew for sure where it is from... Any help is appreciated.

Try a search: Ceylon Octopus man coin.

http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/in...topic=1286.0

It appears to date from the 13th century or earlier. I have not checked for varieties/ types. It is apparently fairly common.

This website has a list of the various monarchs that issued these coins in Sri Lanka, with pics and illustrations to help you tell them apart by monarch. From that site, your coin is of king Bhuvanaikabahu I (AD 1273 - 1284).
