My brother and I have recently started hunting. We have mostly just bought $10 or so worth of pennies at a time but we wanted more so we bought a box and it was all brand new shiny 2016. Does anybody have any tips on how to avoid getting a shiny new box? Is it rude to ask for one that looks old? Or should we just stick to only $10 at a time?

I don't see a bank opening up the box for you so that you can look at the enders before you decide to buy.

You can ask, however.

Rarely happens. Just take it back to another bank and exchange it for dirty pennies.

When I used to search, I told them I wanted old ones, easy enough to see though the holes, better to ask first than after the bring the shiny ones out.

Some boxes have holes to see the content, some dont.
If you get all new ones, then yeah, as suggested, just go to a different bank and "cash them in" or ask to exchange for a different box.
Getting all new ones does happen from time to time...

to CCF. I would be happy if one of the 12 boxes I bought was all 2016P cents.I got a full box of 2016D and found nada. If your friendly with the tellers just ask for "not new cents" boxes.

Thanks everybody for the tips! We have since bought 5 boxes and our best finds so far have been a 1920 I found, and my brother found a steel penny. I also found my first dime, 1979 Canadian.

For my key bank the teller whom I deal with orders me the boxes of dimes, halves, nickels etc. she knows I search for older coins and silver. She always allows me to open the box to make sure they aren't all new ones.....if they are she gets me another box to open and I take that one instead. She gives out the new ones to the other customers. It's a win win situation.

I was tired last night and realized that dime I found actually isn't Canadian. It's a 1979 10 cent Swiss rappen I think is how that's spelled ha!
