I was given this coin by a friend, who was given it by her grandfather.

It's a fairly large coin, bigger than any of the current US coins, and heavier than it looks. The sides were once ridged, but it's been worn down enough that the ridges are fairly minimal now.

I've been curious about this for a while, and would mainly like to know what it is and if it has any worth. I'm not much of a coin collector, so I really have no idea what I'm dealing with.

At first glance, it looks like a private-issue commemorative token. It doesn't list an issue date, but the style of the obverse type (particularly "1788") strikes me as late 19th-early 20th C. Perhaps it was issued around their centenary in 1888? Just a wild guess!

PLEASE NOTE: this thread is several years old and has been bumped by brandonb12.

I believe these are a category of coin-like medals known as "so-called dollars". As for value, it really depends. Putting it on ebay would really be a lottery; it might go for a little, it might go for a lot.

Here's the thread GO posted a long time ago in a subforum far far away, in a thread even older than this one.

This is not a coin. It's a medal. The design, especially the rendering of a whimsical bird, suggest to this longtime token and medal collector that this is a late 20th century issue; most likely 1980's. This medal was probably struck as a commercial enterprise; to be sold at historic, tourist spots as a memento. My estimate as to worth is $1 or so as a curiosity.
