I now live in the Phoenix area and when we moved here I presumed we would see more Mexican coins in casual circulation than we did in Chicago. In the year or so we have lived here we have found Euro and Canadian coins (mostly due to snowbirds here) but have yet to see a Mexican coin.

I might be going across the border soon and wondered if banks in border towns sell rolled coin like they do in the USA. Can I walk in with $100 US and exchange it for Mexican coin?

It has been 20 years since I was in Mexico and wasn't coin collecting at the time, all purchases were made by US dollars and change given in US as well. (In Canada most places will accept US dollars and give change back in Canadian accounting for the exchange rate...)

I live closer to the border than you do and still have never seen any Mexican coinage in circulation.

I've become something of a collector of Mexican specie myself, but almost completely ignore that from the decade before and ever since the reform of 1992. That's almost all "bargain" or "junk" bin stuff for a reason. So I just can't see any good purpose to exchanging spendable American dollars for the likes of it, rolled or not.

If you do go, what you might look for is 19th and early 20th century silver (or even gold) issues, with the caveat that there seems to be a propensity down there for polishing them. But I think you'd actually do better shopping the Mexican coin sellers in the Phoenix area, at least one of which is a premier specialist dealer for such material. You'd also be well advised to attend the U.S. Mex. N.A. event there in October.

IIRC the Mexican peso has done very poorly against the USD in the past couple decades. Grab a type set or even a full set if that suits your fancy, but you'd probably get stuck if you sunk $100 into miscellaneous small change. I have seen piles of modern Mexican junk go for a couple dollars on ebay.

go to the local value village or other second hand thrift stores, they usually always have bags of random coins, you would probably get some Mexican coins that way.

You could hit a swap meet here in Arizona for modern Mexican coins, too. But I'm betting that there are several coin shops right there in the Phoenix metro area that'll have plenty in their "bargain" bins. I see this all the time, often AU/UNC, selling for, like, 5 for $1. If you really have to have rolls, Banco Nacional de Mexico {Banamex) is owned by Citigroup, and there are 83 Citibank locations in the Phoenix region, any of which may well be able to obtain those for you, with the current exchange rate being roughly 5½¢ U.S. to one Mexican peso. In any case, you probably don't have to travel into Mexico to get this project going.

If your are adventurous buy the large modern Mexico coin lots off ebay at a steep discount, pick out what you want and exchange the rest for face value and a profit. In and out of Mexico is a pain in the neck from San Diego.
