Out the back door of the mint branch offices in Hull Quebec. The coins were not available through general commerce in 1966. They were however available at a huge premium from your Favourite coin dealer back in the day.

Not funny at all . This and similar kinds of garbage back doored out of the RCM is hardly a joke. The late 1960s were a field day for socalled errors and varieties.

Years ago I was told by one of my contacts in the mint that this variety was struck by mistake and packaged in the PL sets. The error was discovered and the pieces were cut out of the sets and bagged for destruction. Of course, they somehow got issued. If this explanation is true (and I believe it is), that makes the 1966 small beads dollar fundamentally different from the "errors" that were being "manufactured to order". Backdoor maybe, but definitely not garbage.

JHAX That explanation is a slight stretch, based on all the other shenanigans that went on back then. There was a lot of scissor work , but Pretty sure it did not involve cutting up PL sets The biggest problem with that explanation is that one side is business strike and the other is PL. Hmm "............

I'll concede that I've not carefully examined one of the coins. Which side is the "BU" side? If it's the obverse, that still doesn't necessarily disprove my source's explantation. Some of the 1965 PL dies weren't very good. I will say that my source was highly placed in the mint and other information I've received from him has proved very reliable. He never tried to justify any of the other stuff that we now call backdoor. So, laugh if you want. I'm simply passing along what I've believed to be reliable information.

PL obverse. Mint state reverse. PCGS erroneously labels them as PL coins , ICCS calls them MS. Also by the way DR Haxby , would never laugh at you personally. You , sir are a most respected member of the Numismatic community in more ways than one! kindest regards . Jack

What a neat story! Great back and forth, I find it really interesting, one side is business the other side is pl.
Business on the front, party at the back!
Have a good weekend.

There is a kind of reasonable explanation of how this coin was created by simply the pressman given the wrong dies, but more than likely due to the time period, more probably custom made.

This is a very interesting read. I have always been intrigued by this variety. I have inspected numerous 1966 pl sets as well as circulation strikes looking for the small bead variety. A well respected coin dealer advised me that I will not find one (in the wild) either, but I still keep looking, lol.

You won't find one in the wild. None have ever been found "in the wild" As Pacificoin said they all originate from a single source direct to dealers. Whether the source was the backdoor or a single branch of a certain bank is a matter of speculation, I vote for backdoor as there were a lot of items leaving the mint by that method in the era of the Hull branch.

I think this piece (1966 SB), with all other similar oddities is enough meat for a book if one like it doesn't already exist. Although not very flattering for the CDN Mint, and maybe only to a select, target audience, it might be a great informative read. Might be something if all the great coin minds in this forum would pool their knowledge and contribute to the writing of such a book or any book for that matter...

That " book " has already been written. It just remains between the ears of those who have first hand knowledge or experience from those lovely dark days of 1965- 1971 . Maybe in another 20 years or so the real stories of all the back door jobs will finally be told. Until then enjoy and speculate on what , when , who , where, and why all that material exists.

The 1974 Charlton lists a mintage of 485 and a value of $250. I wonder what the going rate at the mint was to create $121,250 worth of coins in 1974 dollars.
