I just picked up an SK Componon S 80mm lense for a good price. Also have an El Nikkor 80mm as well. On both, there is an "extra" adjustment ring (not aperture)....I don't know what these adjustments are used for.

On the Nikkor, there are 5 stop positions but nothing seems to change when moving the ring through it's range. On the SK, there is a lever that moves and seems to control the aperture to some extent outside of the hard aperture stops.

Someone please educate me on the function and use of these spare adjustments. Thanks in advance.

You use the lever as follows. Set the aperture you want to take the photograph at, then move the lever so that the aperture is actually wide open. Focus then before you take the shot move the lever to close the aperture to the F stop you have set. (you will have to adjust the exposure)
