I finally assembled, with Ray's help, my under $400 setup (not counting stand) and want to fine tune my photos. Any tips definitely appreciated. Here are the first shots. The coins are just ones that were on my desk. I'm learning light is a big deal - I'll have to amend the diffuser, Ray, since it won't fit on the lens (too wide, the material hits the control arm of the stand). I'll take a shot of the setup, once I clean off my desk a little

Okay, here's the setup. I have black Jansjos coming (wife wants the copper and copper was all they had in stock when I ordered these ones).

Chequer, is it possible to write the EXIF of the photos? I think there is too much noise.

I would suggest to use a spirit level for your set up, use WB not automatic, and turn "Long Exposure Noise Reduction" ON when your shutter speed is below 1/125. (The faster speed makes the image sharper)

What improvements can I make to this? I do have the diffuser attached. Also, this seems to be the largest I can shoot with the current bellows set up ... where do I go for larger coins?

That picture looks great. Is the coin actually brownish like the picture?

Your photos look great chequer, my only suggestion would be to adjust your white balance - This can be done in post-processing.

Edit: I hope you don't mind; I adjusted the white balance of your most recent picture. Is this closer to what the coin looks like in hand?

Yes, I should likely pay better attention to the white balance ... it's kind of in between mine and yours, Canadian-Banknotes. Thanks for looking, everyone, and I'm very open for any tips. I find it difficult to assess my own photos (like grading your own coins, I suppose), but it just seems to be missing something. Maybe it's time to look into focus stacking? Am I at that point yet?

For larger coins, you'll need to remove the bellows and substitute with a short extension tube. The helicoid can still be used for focusing.

Can you show pics of the diffuser that didn't work and the one that did? I'm always looking for new/better ideas for lighting.

Rather than try to upload my own pics, here's pretty much the same system (this is Ray's site) and the circular diffuser isn't cut yet on mine, so it's hitting the arm on the stand and bending a bit. Works though and I can always trim it a bit if it bothers me. Hope that helps.

Be great if I included the link:
