I am trying to find out why my 1901 half penny has a large P punched on Victoria's head was this from somebody after stamp was made? Any help much appreciated:)

People have been punching letters and numbers into coins since metal stamps were first made.

This is very common "Post Mint Damage", although some collect these as a curiosity.
