Greetings from Victoria, I had thought that because of the wear this was a $10 coin despite the scarcity of the 1862, buy I saw an auction record at $65 for such a coin described as VG y the auctioneer. Does my copy reach the VG grade?

Looks about right. You might check Tony Clayton's page for UK coins -

I am a veteran U.S. collector who has been at it for 55+ years. Using U.S. standards, that coin would not be a VG because of the pitting on the obverse. That would pull it down to a "details" grade, and the net grade from me would barely make Good.

My sharpness grade would only be "Good" for the obverse in any case. Most all of the detail is gone.

I'm under the impression that British standards are more conservative than U.S. standards, but I don't deal with British dealers in general because of the access issue.

The grade I gave you is based on my experience with U.S. coins and might not be good for the British system.

Retail for fine is approx £50 so for $10 you've done OK.
