Just can't sell a coin. Used to be able to give some away but not that anymore either.

If you wish to examine a coin with any sort of lustre, best to have the coin protected in some way or other.

Curiously, the handling of most ancient coins does not need gloves. Nevertheless, all of my ancient coins are in 2x2's mainly for identification purposes, but protection from damage or wear is still a good idea.

I have never used gloves, but all of my more valuable modern coins in MS64 and better are encapsulated, but none of them are slabbed.

JSW, I am a bit quirky when it comes to photographing coins in my collection.

I only save coins I like to look at, first of all. That said, not all the coins I save are beautiful, or even necessarily attractive. But when I decide to keep one, it stays in "limbo" until I get it photographed. Imagine, cigar boxes and jewelry boxes full of coins in half-stapled flips that got their portrait, but I didn't like it.. and do not forget the coins sitting out all over the desk (in 2x2's, or maybe next to them) still waiting for pics.. my husband has been a collector for about 40 years, so, all those vulnerable coins sitting so still somehow manage to spark enormous tension between us. I just can't put them away until I have the perfect picture. What can I say, I am an artist.

Actually I am a Germophile: I have owned a Mercedes car for the better part of 20 years.

I love to actually handle ancient coins: to have a piece of genuine antiquity sitting in the palm of your hand.
I have a couple of Widow's Mites (luke 21: 1-4,) so I manage to get a real hardware connection with Bible times.

JSW, I am also a germaphobe. I'm constantly washing my hands and using sanitizer when I can't. While I'm handling coins, like jbuck, I wash my hands before, during and after. I however, love holding coins in my hands.

Speaking of handling coins, one of the customers of my LCS is actually Blind! This is no joke. I have seen him in action. He sifts through the foreign junk box and it takes quite a while. I have no idea what he is "looking" for, what sort of designs, shapes or sizes that he feels that make that particular one a "keeper", since I have never asked.

So for some, at least, handling coins is everything.

Silver is an antibacterial metal. For those whom might recall, does passing through the GI tract clean the coin?

Can't find the thread, but there was a thread with a title like Guess What Caused This Artificial Toning or something like that. Probably within 6 months or so after I joined if you are wanting to search it, it is worth the hunt.

Anyway, monster toned coin.

Lots of guesses.

Turns out the guys infant daughter ate the coin.

He is going to save it for a souvenir for her when she is an adult from what I recall.

Good thread.

To answer your question Parklane, while this particular coin was quite well cleaned, I am sure that had more to do with the, uh, packaging his daughter delivered it in than anything.

Beautiful toner though.

Not sure what his daughter will think knowing that she made that. Better than a lumpy clay coffee mug I guess, but probably embarrassing for the daughter when she gets to that age.

Now that I think about it, fairly certain I posted on that thread.

Another good read in a related story, with a metal detector:
