Used to do it all the time in my youger collecting years. Finding 09-vdb's and 1910-1920 was common ,not to mention Buffalo's and 30's to 40's Jefferson's. Of cause silver back then was not and issue to find.

As noted on the CCF before, I'm so old that I could put together the entire WLH set as a kid in three months or so just for the fun of it, but cashed them in and started on something else because I couldn't afford to keep them. True story.

Of course -- almost always pay with cash. I keep all the change separate until I can search it.

Yes ..l I always use currency, so I get change back.
Put the change everyday into a big bowl. After it adds up I use the change to buy a coin.

Just the opposite. I hardly ever use cash. I'm to cheap and every time I uses my credit card, I get a percent of what I spend back. Then when it reaches a certain amount, it gets transferred to a savings account and is also upped by another 50%. Just can't see using cash.

I used to, but not so much these days. I have a few places I like to use cash, but they always round down so there is not much for me to search (and I am not one to refuse a discount). I keep telling myself I need to use more cash though.

If I have the cash on me, I always prefer to use that first, then just roll with the debit card until I get more cash in the wallet.... And I search every coin soon after it hits my palm ! I don't even wait to get it home first...lol My wife used to think that I was just ensuring that I had the correct change, but no, I'm looking for goodies ! The feeling one gets when you receive a silver coin...a buffalo. ..a Wheatie. ..or whatever, from a McDonald's cashier, or a Chinese food drive thru....it's just euphoric! Getting something like that for FACE VALUE just doesn't happen & isn't supposed to happen.... (except in CRH'n) Additionally, if you're a coin collector with a monthly budget of ZERO, you are much more appreciative & thankful for the good fortune. ... So yes, I like cash whenever possible ! --

I too check right away. I like keeping a loupe in my car.
I alsso ask for more pennies in my change. So for example if my change is 14 cents I'll ask for it back in all pennies. Or even if it's say .79 change, I'll ask for 9 pennies.
I also try & pay for things in penny rolls. One of my local stores that I frequently go to, they'll accept up to $10 in rolls if they're running low. They just take them back to be weighed. And I've noticed that occasionally I can pay at McDonald's or Chick-Fil-A with my rolls too.

Cash - always. Considering the last remaining silver in circulation (here) will start to disappear in October this year I'd like to get as much change as possible. If not, there's always the low mintage years that will disappear soon as well. I too try to get as much change as possible when I'm abroad. During the month I was in Australia I even bought friends' change to get as much as possible. I ended up with plenty of commemoratives!

I use my plastic card for gas, groceries and purchases from large retail stores. Most everything else I use cash. I do still enjoy checking my change although it's very rare to find anything other than a '70 something S mint cent or nickel.

I only do this abroad, as I have all the current possible circulation of the country I live in in mint condition - and paying in cash is expensive here as it costs quite a bit to take cash out of the bank.
Anyway, when abroad I do this all the time. In fact, if I'm 'missing' a certain coin, I make sure to go and shop something small, like a bottle of water or so, in order to get a copy of the desired coin. Sometimes it's a huge disappointment to find out that a certain coin isn't in circulation in everyday life anymore, sometimes there's the huge feeling of victory when a commemorative coin or a coin in mint state pops up.

Quote: use cash as much as possible in hopes of finding gems in my change? Yes, absolutely. My best change find, was 2 silver dimes, vacationing in Daytona Beach, Florida. I still have them.
