Second Chance offers

Are these good, bad, indifferent? I can see how unscrupulous sellers could leverage this (e.g., bid shill bids up, then proprietor offers to second place bidder).

Barring any evidence of unscrupulous use, why should a buyer *not* take advantage of a second chance offer (unless the buyer decides they didn't really want it at that price)? What is the seller downside of offering a second chance?

Do *you* take advantage of second chance offers as a buyer? As a seller?

They are good for some, bad for others and indifferent to a few. You were bidding on a coin you really want and you just lost it buy a few cents and you get the 2nd chance offer - maybe it is a good idea to accept it. As a seller, I might have more than 1 of the same item I sell. First item ended at the price that I really like and the runner up is just a few cents / dollars behind - I will make a second chance offer and will explain to the buyer that it is for a similar item and will provide pics of this new item. Works our for everyone.

The thing I hate about this is, that I pay my TOP PRICE for the coin I am bidding on. So, let's say someone bids $100 and my top bid that beats that $100 and only one other person bids is $125 and the coin sells for one bid ahead of mine at $126. A week later(or less time) the seller contacts me with a second chance offer of $125. Now, I know that is the most I was willing to pay, but if the person who won it hadn't bid $126, I would have won the coin for $101 beating the $100 bid. Those are the incidents when I wonder if it wasn't shill bidding at work and the price was just being jacked up by the seller or a friend of his.
