The seller might actually be rather savvy.

He/she might realize that there are a group of collectors who pursue "low ball" US commemorative coins and are willing to pay premiums for coins in exceptionally low grades.

The description does exaggerate a bit in its attempt to hype the coin, but collectors of these low ball coins pay as much attention to the population numbers for these coins as do collectors who pursue the top end of the grading scale.

Commems is correct about the few of us who are pursuing the type set of circulated classic silver commemorative ... we do indeed pay attention to the population numbers.

This particular coin has made multiple ebay appearances ... each time opening at a higher price then marked down to appear to be 'on sale'.

The marketability of a coin such as this one .... relative to demand ... is an interesting study in this very niche market.

While the seller is absolutely correct that at PCGS F15 it is Population 1 of 2 at that grade ... there is no demand for the coin from collectors like myself pursuing the circulated commemoratives.

The PCGS lowball for the 1926-S Oregon Trail is AG03 ... with certified examples existing as well in G06, VG08 and F12.

To a lowball collector ... this coin is Pop 2/4.

It is way overpriced relative to the lack of demand and occupies that unfortunate middle ground in grade range where it is way too low in grade to interest the typical commemorative collector and way too high in grade to interest us lowball collectors.

It's likely to continue making repeat ebay appearances.

Writing to add some nuanced information that my brain failed to process during my early morning, pre-work, reply above.

Most collectors understand the role of supply and demand relative to the pricing of any collectible item.

For numismatic items ... this is equally important as it establishes the baseline price for any coin.

The best example I can think of right now is the 1909-S VDB cent ... the 484,000 mintage will always be in demand .. hence the price floor for this coin will likely be maintained.

This is not the case for the .. IMHO ... underappreciated circulated classic silver commemorative series.

There are a total of five of us who are pursuing the set in PCGS certified circulated grades ... and four of us only want to find a type set of 50 coins.

The lesson for the seller of this coin (if they could read this thread) ... is that the very limited demand at this price point will never be sold.

The only way IMHO this coin sells is at $70 opening bid for a collector who simply wants an example of this tremendous design.

Lesson to the CCF is do not assume you can find a 'worn out' commemorative and re-sell for profit ... it's a very selective and limited market.

The absolute desirable condition grade in a low ball series is PO1 or PO2. An F15 is far too high, even a VG6 is considered high.

It's back for the 5th time ...

Will never sell at this price point based on my comments above ... a very unfortunate market-place position to occupy ... the seller 'thinks' there are interested low-ball type collectors ... but this otherwise lovely coin has no market at that price.
