I have seen quite a few references to "bank teller trays" but here in Ottawa, Canada I have never seen such a thing. There are no loose coins sitting visible to the customer. If I ask for rolls they open a drawer beneath the counter-only rolls are visible, if I can see anything at all.

Can anyone hazard as estimate of how many banks have teller trays? 0, 25, 50, 75, 100%?

They all have teller trays. Some banks here just have them in their drawers and out of sight, some have them outside in the open. Its a matter of perhaps bank policy or personal preference if they have them out or not.

If there's a central cash, like CIBC when I worked for them, there's no tray. I'm not sure of the percentage of banks that use a central cash now.

*edited to add, no teller tray with a central cash ... usually still one central tray (one tray for coin that all tellers/csrs use when they receive loose coin.

Thanks, guys. I was kind of curious, and I thought that it might depend on the bank. Not that it would do me much good here in Canada if my bank had them. Probably 80 % or more of the nickel and all of the copper has been sucked out of circulation with this alloy recovery program.
Rest in Peace

I don't know about Canada , But here in the U.S. most if not all banks have Teller trays or coin draws . you can look at the coins that they have . about a month ago I noticed 5 Kennedy's some had dull silverish edges, I asked if I can buy them, paid her $2.50 ,threw them in my pocket and left . when I got home 4 of them were 40% silver.

My teller had $10 of halves sitting around in her tray - since it was slow she let me see them on the spot... no silver, but there was a really nice 03-P NIFC.

Although I don't deal with banks anymore because of the fees, they all had teller trays. Now that you mention it, my credit union, in which I am part owner, does not.
