I believe SilverDon is correct in his reasoning as to why the RCM might be calling their upcoming basketball coin the "first ever convex-shaped coin" but it is, IMO, a pure misrepresentation of the facts.

All of the various "curved" or "cupped" or "domed" coins that have been released by the US, Australia, France, etc. have a convex side and a concave side. The RCM does not appear to be doing anything new with this coin -- they certainly didn't with the Library of Parliament coin earlier this year (even though they claimed they were!).

For the RCM to claim a first-ever (coming years after others have released such coins) is ludicrous. I very much believe that the marketing team has gotten too bold of late and needs to show more restraint so to not mislead the Mint's customers (especially those new to collecting).

@SilverDon

The basketball coin is pushing out from the back so that it looks like the side of the basketball and the other side with the Queen is pushing inwards.

$25.00 face value. 30.75g. 36.07mm. serrated

Designed by Glen Green

Also the years "1891 . 2016" appear on back of coin

At least we beat the Americans to the punch?

Fortunately, the RCM's ideas don't need to pass through legislation. Makes them more nimble in a competitive market where new concepts are rare.

A question regarding the 150th anniversary subscription: If you subscribe now, does it go to current MC status or the MC status starting July 1?

I already reach the highest tier I could get and adding more to the current year does me no good. I would prefer that it go toward next years MC status starting July 1.

Perhaps I should wait until after July 1 to subscribe. At mintage of 25,000, these coins are not going to be sold out anytime soon.

There were two Millennium proof silver 25 cent sets - one for 1999 and another for 2000.

I'm almost ashamed to admit I bought the set mainly because I thought the oval case looked sort of cool. 16 years ago there wasn't much variety in packaging, can't think of any other explanation why it intrigued me. LOL!

However I'm sort of curious to see what kind of case comes with the 150th series although I definitely won't be tempted. But I do think it's deserving of something creative and unique.

@MoneyPenney

The 13 coin subscription starts shipping July 2016. No worries it will count for next MC cycle and not this one. I am in the same boat as you at the highest level. If you look at your tracking orders on the website, you will see that the subscription order is entered as Zero dollars. Only when each coin shipped will it count.

The 150th series comes with a premium wooden box. It looks like the one they sell for $129.99.

And the case come with a the FIRST coin. I can see some people cancelling the subscription after the first coin just to get the box. No cheap cardboard case this time around.

Also, you get a free 1 year subscription to Canadian Geographic.

Hmm, thanks for the info, MoneyPenney. So yes, if that's the case RCM will certainly be giving away a lot of free wooden boxes. They tighen one revenue leakage concerning XforX and then open another... And a free 1 year Canadian Georgraphic subscription? Oh yay. It'd be a better incentive if the final coin was n/c.

They really are. Both sides look great. I have a few of the proof dollars and a couple of the clad half dollars.

Not a basketball guy at all, but that basketball coin is really something. I'd love to get one in hand.

Still doesn.t compare to the US baseball design coins, simple and perfect curve without the use of paint.
