Hi folks, I have been researching coins for a while now. I have an old collection and have been using the internet to research. I think I may have a Morgan that might be worth something, as the condition seems nice. I was wondering for your opinion on grading value for the Morgan that I am posting.

Thanks!

Jason

Looks like an AU condition that has been cleaned in the past and retoned.
Around 30-40 bucks I think. It always nice to revisit your own collection and find something cool :).

90o summed it up well. Don't know if you can pull close to $40 though more like $25 +/-. Also, this is the VAM forum for Morgan dollar & Peace dollar VAM identifications. For general questions the main classic forum is the place to post

Thanks! Although I dont know about cleaning or toning, other than it devalues the coin, I know for a fact all of my Morgans(13) have been sitting in a cloth pouch in my grandmothers closet for well over 60 years without being disturbed in any way.

I use cotton gloves also when handling any coins. I have ordered the Air-tite containers to permanently put them in and I plan on getting a better camera for pictures, and also taking my collection to a reputable local coin dealer as well.

Thanks for the help!

To the CCF

Cleaning is definitely a value killer when it come to Morgan silver dollars.

Toning, on the other hand, is a completely different thing and can actually increase the coins value depending on color, intensity and eye appeal.

60yrs ago it was VERY common to clean or dip coins to "make them.shiny" everyone was doing it. Everyone. Ok well not everyone but just about. It was what was popular. Today we cherish "origin skin" because of originality, beauty, and because so many coins have been cleaned or dipped from being the norm in the past. Your coin seems to be one of those. Don't worry though. It's a common date and would only make it worth maybe $20 more if it was an original AU coin. Stick around, show off some more coins and stuck with the hobby and this forum and you'll learn more than you ever thought you could about coins
