I just rider some halves but am new to the whole deal. I know to look for silver but that is all I really know. I have been reading threads and see people talking about clad coins, proofs, and the s mint marks. Are all of the s mint marks a proof coin? I also see on ebay to sellers referring to say a 2005 s proof coin as 90% silver. Are of the s coins 90% silver? I'm really confused on the whole ordeal. If someone could educate me I would really appreciate it!

No, but the proofs are very easy to separate from the business strikes. A proof will look like this...

No, Since 1992, the mint has made silver and clad proof halves. All S mint halves before that are not silver with the exception of some commemoratives and special editions.

I hope this helps. Let us know if you have any more questions!

So all halves after 1992 with an s mark are proofs and 90% silver? Can you still tell by looking at the edges at the coins like you can the older ones?

Not all halves issued after 1992 are silver. The Red Book calls them clad proofs and silver proofs. There are two types of proof halves for 1992-present. One type has silver, the other one doesn't.

Yes, this is one of the fastest methods of finding silver proofs

All S mint Kennedys are proofs with the single exception of the 1976 S. It comes as both a proof and a business strike. The business strike version is 40% silver.

The proofs from 1971 S to 1974 S and 1977 S to 1991 S are all copper nickel clad.

The proofs from 1968 S to 1970 S are all 40% silver.

The 1976 S Proofs come as both copper nickel clad and 40% silver.

From 1992 S to date they come both copper nickel clad and 90% silver.
