This is the second of two oddball pennies that I cannot find any information on. Any insight or even speculation would be greatly appreciated. 1969 was the moon landing, obviously. A novelty from a fair, perhaps?

Sorry about the lighting; I am not very good at this. :)

It is called a Counterstrike. Someone took a penny and added the crescent moon strike.

While an interesting subset of the collector hobby it holds no real numismatic value.

Thanks n9jig. I was thinking it added no value and likely removed any inherent value. I think both of these oddies are cool. I was just wondering if they were part of some large, known event or a smaller, let known event.

There are a wide variety of counterstamps out there and they pop up in circulation from time to time. I usually save them and put them in my "Everything Else" book. As a coin the value is usually just whatever the melt is but as an interesting specimen they are right up there with the better things. I usually invent some wild back story for the ones I find, usually way more interesting than the real story...

Nice counterstamp, JohnFluharty.

We have a thread dedicated to them...

When done on an otherwise unremarkable cent some counterstamps can add value. someone on ebay who collects counterstamped Lincoln cents might pay a little bit for it. not an offer to buy I would probably pay around .50 for the moon and around a buck for the bunny just for the novelty.
