Hi! I am far more of a coin nut than a banknote sort. I have recently purchased as a gift for my father, who seems to appreciate the paper side of things, two sets of bills. Each set has identical serial numbers, same denomination but different years?! I have no idea the value of such a set but it seemed like a pretty cool find. I'm just wondering if anyone might know what a set like that would be called in the banknote world? The closest thing I've heard of is a "brother/ sister" set, though clearly these would be something different. A "time traveller" maybe? Ha, just my first guess. Any help would be much appreciated. Maybe there's a mathamatician out there who could take a stab at the odds. Just want to inform myself before I gift them. Thanks!

They're called a "matching serial number" set....

Value all depends on the year and denomination as well as the number.

A whole bunch of these were put together and released as in sets. They're nice, as it looks like they're framed with a glass or hard plastic covering to protect the notes... They look nice but I don't think I would pay much more than $40 for the $10's and $20 for the $5 sets.

There are also sets of certain series that were put together that had the exact same serial number. So for the Devil's face series in UNC condition I've seen one of these sets go for north of 15K.

If you could give us some picture or more details it would help....

Date of notes, condition of notes, prefix and serial numbers... denomination etc.. all helps..

You hit the nail on the head. They are worth much less than I expected. Colonial Acres has pair of matching serial numbers $5 from different years that they are selling for $25.39.

Awesome, thanks both. They are in transit, perhaps for a while if the postal lockout goes through. I got a $5 and $10 set both for double face value with a couple of bucks shipping. Both are mid '80's and 2000's bills, nothing spectacular about the numbers other than the fact that they match. Seem from the pictures to be in UNC condition. They are just novelty gifts though, so not too concerned about value. How do people go about finding these? Seems like a tedious endevor. Thanks for the help!

These are typically not "found" if it's in a set produced by the BoC the run was set aside for this very reason.

There are a few people that are REALLY into searching lots and lots of notes... I call them "brickers" as they're usually ordering 10+ bundles from the bank to look through on a regular basis.

Unless you get two bricks of different denominations with numbers close the chances of finding matching numbers is very VERY low.

Personally I like to collect notes with the serial # 9999999 on them... (it's the very last note made which I think is pretty cool) course it's one heck of a hard time to find 'em and worse when you have to pay for 'em.. but that's the price we pay for being in such a hobby right?

Personally I think your set is cool.. I've seen a few before..What I really like is the fact that it shows the difference of two different notes of the same denomination... I really like that... hope you enjoy the set.. if possible show off some pics when you get the chance!
