Hello! I just purchased this coin. Is it authentic? I believe it is, but hard to tell. If there are any pros out there who can help it would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to the collecting game! Thank you!

Looks like a Vlack 76-A, if it is a fake it is a good one. Looks real to me.

So with a coin like this, I'm assuming it was created and back-dated to 1776 by Machin Mills?

I compared it to the 1776 Machin Mills on the PCGS price guide, and several pick up points match. Yeah, it looks real to me also.

Quote: So with a coin like this, I'm assuming it was created and back-dated to 1776 by Machin Mills? No, actually amurguia was asking if he had a counterfeit of a counterfeit. Machin Mills was a New York state minter that produced both genuine and counterfeit coins in the 1780s. Their "after hours work" is of great interest to those who specialize in coins of this era. There is no way that this coin was minted in 1776. It was struck later.

Correct on both count's. I wanted the authentic counterfeit MM coin :) Then, because Machin Mills started 1787 assumed they softened the die and back-dated to 1776. All fun history.

Welcome to the CCF, Amurguia. Cool piece, with a historic date, even if it is a genuine counterfeit!

I had never heard of Machin Mills, that's a pretty interesting piece of history.
