I found this 1880 Shield nickel in an unsearched lot of wheat pennies. Yes strange. I am new to collecting and would like to get some opinions on how best to proceed. I realize if I'm lucky at best it will grade G-4 but is it even worth having it graded or due to its rarity should I just sell as is on ebay. Any thoughts are appreciated. Hope I posted in correct area of forum. Thank you in advance and be well.

For some reason that one is screaming counterfeit to me for some reason especially since it is a key date.

Even if genuine it would be a details grade due to the hit / grinding at 11.

It's a VERY poor counterfeit.

Cool fact for this date: it's cheaper to buy a proof example than a business strike!

Is there a way to find out if it is a fake? I have purchased other lots from the same person and have found a 1909 vdb s, 1922 no d, 1877 Indian head and all those were real but I agree that it is more likely than not a fake. I know it is not metal (magnet) but how else to tell? Guess a grading company would know for sure.

The shape of the 1 in the date is all I need to see. Here is a genuine one for comparison:

I would venture a guess that those are unfortunately most likely counterfeit as well.

Yep,
Thank you. Stars are off on reverse also. Glad I checked here before sending out. Appreciate your help. Lesson learned and now I know it is a good idea to take a known example and look at all the details to help figure out if genuine. Be well

please post pics of the 1909-S VDB, the 1922 and the 1877. I doubt they are close to real and for me at least, posting pics is unfortunately going to be the only way I don't chalk this up to a lot of malarkey.

You'll have to forgive my pessimism and of course I will take a lot of heat for this from the official committee whom I'm sure would rather I keep my humble opinion to myself but I have seen, over the course of years now on this forum, people "testing" the expertise of the Numismatists and collectors on this site as a precursor to an online sale of the coin(s).

No luckily they were not. Sold them to a coin collector who owns a store out here. That's why it never really crossed my mind as not being real. He was just out of town so I figured I would check here on this one. I'm sure he will be interested in seeing this. Thanks again.

I will see if he still has them when he gets back and post pictures. Although I am new to coin collecting I have known him for years so I'm sure he won't mind. And sorry if taken wrong but I really wasn't trying to test anyone. Guess somethings are better kept to myself. Lesson learned. And if he does take a better look at them and discovers that they were like this one I will post that also. Be well

Welcome to the CCF, dandme. Sad beginning, what with the counterfeit nickel, but seeing these can be helpful, educational. I look forward to seeing pics of the other pieces. With regard to the 1880 "nickel" ... what's the weight? I'm doubting it's even made of nickel and is more likely some measure of pot metal.

Confirming the consensus that your Shield nickel is a very poorly made fake ... but you already knew that from our input.

I'm writing to follow-up on the other key-dates you claim to have purchased from the same seller/dealer ... you should be suspect of all of them.

Post some photos here and we'll give some expert advise.

It was the 8's that tipped me off. Large and misshapen.
