Hey all. I found this Chinese coin in my coin box, but don't know anything about it. The coin is either silver or a high silver content alloy.

I was able to find one source suggesting that this coin may have been a gift distributed as a gift at the wedding of Pu Yi, the last Chinese emperor. That is all I can find, period, about this coin.

If anybody happens to know anything about this coin, the help would be much appreciated. A ballpark estimate of the value would help me as well, since I'm not really a coin collector and don't have any other Chinese items to display it with - I would prefer to sell it and use it to advance my other areas of interest.

Thanks in advance.

Many Chinese coins are replica's of valuable or scarce coins.
A lot of 'coins' are commemorative medals.
The writing on the coin looks like Manchu
It is called a dragondollar, with a 5-clawed imperial dragon.
You should try one of the many silver tests (ping, ice, supermagnet...)

Thanks. Here is an article I found mentioning the coin: http://www.dragondollar.com/coins/t...A7%E6%B8%85/

It pings like the rest of my silver and isn't magnetic. I haven't tried the ice test yet but I will when I'm home from work in a few hours.

My impression is that if it is a counterfeit it must be a good one. I have asked around a little in my family. My uncle brought it back from an antique store in China some years back, but doesn't remember what it was being sold as or what he paid for it.

It looks no different than a fake I have of the same piece.
Extremely unlikely to have any real silver.
One side is a fantasy Fengtien medallion.
I wager it's 45.74mm, 3mm thick, weighs 36.05g, white metal or other but not coin silver.
Can't pick it up with a magnet, but it will pull a small suspended supermagnet.
And will certainly not react as dia-magnetic as a silver coin would.
It's also not likely to be found in Kann- an expert reference for Chinese coins.
(time lapse)
I was distracted and called away, here's a correction: my piece which is fake is better made than yours.
My advice to proceed with selling it on ebay. I pay a few dollars for these and those like them. I have 28 or 29 pieces and would like to make it an even 30.
One thing I don't grasp is "not knowing anything about it" but then "high silver content alloy".
I wager none to very little silver at all. Density test will be some sort of 7 or 8 number and nowhere near 10 or above.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like I won't be retiring on this thing. That's disappointing but far from shocking. I won't bother selling anything on ebay for a few bucks. I'll probably just chuck it back in the drawer I found it in.

It's still worth selling. As an example I bet you could get $5 to $10 plus shipping for this piece.

For the record when I say I don't know anything about it I mean I know nothing about the history of the coin. It's easier to judge the makeup of it than the history.

Sorry about that.
Your right.
My posts don't always have the right tone.
