Unfortunately, I work for a company that considers itself 'environmentally friendly', so I usually don't have my own wheels (taxi from the airport to the hotel and so, but for the rest I'm supposed to pretend public transport is equally good in the States as it is in downtown Oslo). Usually I just live right next to where I should be, as otherwise it's just a big trouble. I once had a conference in northern Dallas, near the Lyndon B Johnson Freeway. My secretary booked me in a hotel downtown, about an hour and a half away by bus from the conference center (and a solid 45 minute drive)... Since, I do my own bookings again.  Edited by UltraRant

Just to revitalize this thread a bit and give an update. I actually was in DC for the weekend and I visited 5 banks here. I didn't get hold of any coin rolls. Apparently being a foreigner with no bank account and no place of residence inside the US doesn't make it easier to get hold of some rolls. In two days I'll head for Chicago (don't ask me why I have to fly back to Europe for a day... I honestly don't know either. Just think of all the flyer points I'll earn!) and I'll try again there. edit Quote:

First of all, it's a shared one and second, usually when the biggest idiots around here screw up, you don't fire them, you're supposed to have a talk with them and listen to a lot of whining before you send them to an expensive training course in order for them to increase their performance and show how much you still love them and that nothing is actually their fault. If I could do it the 'Murican way, I'd instantly kick out about half of my colleagues before the office closes today.  Edited by UltraRant

Getting "boxes" is becoming increasingly difficult, even for individuals who have accounts with the bank. Most medium and small branches only have 1-3 boxes of each denomination in the vault, and the cash logistics service isn't free for the bank. Last time I got a box of nickels, the branch manager stalled for over 45 minutes to try to get me to walk out so she wouldn't actually have to make the transaction.
I would try to stick to a few rolls at a time, present exact cash upfront, and level with the tellers that you are a collector looking for a few souvenirs to bring back. Most should be willing to help out. If not, try again at a different bank, but fabricate a story that your hotel has a coin-operated laundry and you need a few rolls of quarters to tide you over. Quarters are unlikely to cough up silver, but you can have fun collecting the 100-ish designs between the States (1999-2008), Territories (2009) and Parks (2010-) series, most of which circulate freely and collectively make up about 60-75% of any given roll.

Chicago isn't my lucky spot, either. Tried a few banks and don't think it's useful to continue.

Have you tried a store or gas station? At my old job the supervisor's podium and customer service desk always had extra rolls on hand, since customers always needed them for parking meters or laundry or whatever else.
Maybe a CCF member could help you fence a box? Hit me up if your travels ever take you to the metro Charlotte NC area.

I actually think I might give it a try in a smaller village next time instead of a big city. What really caught my eye was that security in banks is quite intense in the big cities and no one seems to trust you if you just ask for stuff. My experience is that things might just be a bit more relaxed in smaller places. I'll keep you all updated and I will post the secret recipe for getting coin rolls as a foreigner without a local bank account as soon as I have found it.  I thank you a lot for the offer! I will contact you as sort of a 'last resort', if you know what I mean. |

Have you visited the Chicago money museum? It's really small but I had fun in there.

hey guys, I'm new to this coin roll hunting gig...am I believing this correctly when reading in regards to how this is done?
simply purchase the rolls from your bank and go home and sort through the coin roll? find or do not find is the gamble, but then simply re-roll the value of the roll and exchange it?
