Please grade this 1808 Half Cent. This is a possible 8/7. I know it has issues but right now it is at a very reasonable price. Right now I am going on the assumption it is not the 8/7. The 8 is of the right design but I am also not sure if this 8 style was minted without the overdate. Any Half Cent experts please chime in. There are still several days left on this auction. Thanks in advance!

This is the 1808 overdate. It is the much more common C-2 variety.

Although the details are quite nice for this variety, and the color is good, the damage in the obverse "VII" and the reverse (many scratches mostly looking intentional) is severe, and that should make this coin "cheap."

Don't be fooled by low prices days before the end of an auction. Usually everything happens at the end, and prices can get high in the blink of an eye. I've seen it happen time and time again.

J, keep us informed with the results, please.
Bill, you must have twenty/twenty vision to see that one.

I too find the graffiti and oxidation distracting, but if you like it, best of luck.

No, it's not that hard. The final "8" on both varieties is quite different. Both of these photos are from the "Coin Facts" site. I hope they don't get mad at me for using them.

The "8" on the normal date variety was made from placing two "0"s from the fraction punch on the reverse on top of each other.

The "8" on the overdate is smaller, and you can see a little of the "7" peaking out from the top.

The main thing on my mind was, "Is it genuine?" There is not no reason to say that, but the darn Chinese are copying so much stuff these days you have think about it. In the old days, I'd look for the diagnostic on these coins, which I used to collect, and BAM!! it's done. Now I have to look further.

BTW BOTH of these 1808 Half Cents are amazing! When I was collecting these coins, the examples I had were both in VF. I couldn't find anything better. The 1808 Half Cent is a tough coin to find in high grade, regardless of the variety.

Bill, Thanks for the info. Very educational. Right now this is listed for about $50. I have merged the Coin Facts photo with my original photo. What do you think?

With all of the damage, it is a "cull." When I was collecting these coins, this was a scarce variety (R-3), but you didn't have buy problem coins to fill the hole, unless your budget was limited. I don't how it is now because I've been out of the market for a long time. When I was a dealer I had one in VG, with no problems, that took forever to sell for less than $100 in the early 2000s.

There is no reason buy this because it is an "investment" or a "milestone" coin. It isn't. If it's part of a low priced variety set, okay. If not, you can do better.
